THE STORY BEHIND IT

In 1990 I had a vision! I was asked to find some land in a hilly location, with water, within 3 hours of Johannesburg (South Africa). This was to be developed into a self-sustaining health retreat. What a great idea, I thought, but, at the time, I had just gone through a divorce, had very little money and two delightful sons, then 5 and 7 years, to bring up. My only other asset a piece of land, bought in the Wilderness, with my ex-husband, for R6,000, which now had a R20,000 bond (mortgage) on it! The temptation to sell was enormous, but a voice in my head said ‘No! Wait until you are offered a MILLION’! This seemed impossible, yet some Divine force successfully restrained me from selling! 15 years later, to everybody’s surprise, R1,000,000 was paid for the land, making the vision a possibility. Yet suitable properties were either gazetted or land claimed!

It was only when my wonderful ‘new’ husband, John, offered to come in as a partner that we were immediately guided to KINGFISHER FARM, 27 kms north west of Bela Bela (previously Warmbaths) in Limpopo (South Africa). It’s less than 2 hours from Johannesburg, has a dam, river and natural springs and is at the foot of undulating hills covered in wild protea, so it fitted the vision perfectly In addition, the 41 hectares has forests, active bee hives and the most incredible energy vortexes, whilst its buildings and outhouses are a delight! Our conscious choice to live off the grid, means that generators, solar and donkeys (wood burning furnaces) provide and heat the water that comes straight from the ground. It is absolutely heaven!

For 7 frenetic months, in 2008, 19 builders, 26 thatchers, a glazier, plumber and a host of others set about converting the STABLES and RIVER COTTAGE into simple, but comfortable, en-suite accommodation; the SHED into a charming STUDIO; the BARN into a cozy communal DINING ROOM cum LOUNGE; whilst an AGAR was installed in the adjoining kitchen. In addition a 4 bedroom dwelling was built to provide rooms for the Farm Manager and his Assistant, as well as 2 rooms for guests, all of which are serviced by solar power. The outcome is that, there is now accommodation for 12 guests (sharing) and plenty of space to hold seminars and workshops. Additional accommodation for another 12 participants is available on neighbouring farms.

Our vision to introduce self-sustaining programs is finally happening in September 2010!  Until then John and I remain totally green (between the ears, that is!) but are extremely eager to learn! Having been guided this far, with the beautiful kingfisher birds encouraging us every step of the way, we just know that everything will turn out exactly as it should be. KINGFISHER FARM is a truly DIVINE space where individuals can once again, tread gently on the land and live in harmony with nature, to rediscover abundant resources within.
